Leveraging the power of education and literacy to enhance community vitality.

Happy Valentine’s Day from HJH!

Thank You!
HJH would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who donated to our programs in 2022! It takes a village to support our diverse offerings, and you always come through for us! We would like to take the time to thank each and every donor, volunteer, and supporter who showed up for us! 2023 is off to a strong start and boy do we have so much planned!

Donation receipts for 2022 will be sent out shortly either via email if we have yours or by regular mail.

One book, two books, THOUSANDS OF BOOKS!

For over a year now, we have been working to disperse thousands of books donated to us by Aim’s bookstore in Cincinnati, Ohio. We have transported many suitcases full of books to SJDS to replenish our Mobile Project and Satellite Library collections. We have also dispersed books to our partner organizations in Nicaragua and even a few here in the US.

This January, Jane, accompanied by Mary Schoder and Joe Speier, returned to Aim’s bookstore to collect even more books!
If you are one of our Library in a Box Recipients and have a need for Spanish titles, have a location in the US where books can be shipped, and can help with shipping costs, we would be happy to provide you with books to lend! There are simply too many for our projects, and we want them in the hands of children!

If you are not a Library in a Box Recipient but would like to learn more about the program and become a recipient, contact [email protected] to learn more and apply.
Books donated to some of our partner organizations at a free workshop we hosted in Granada, Nicaragua in November of last year.

Double your donation through your company’s matching gift program:

A survey conducted by the Conference Board’s Environmental, Social & Governance Center revealed that 94% of major US corporations planned to maintain or increase their charitable giving in 2022. Studies also show that as much as 7 billion dollars from companies’ philanthropic funds do not make their way to nonprofit organizations. Much of this money, which is available through company matching gift programs, goes unused because of lack of awareness by employees.

Now would be a wonderful time to see if you can double your donation.

21st Anniversary Poems: Love Letters to the Biblioteca!

Nicaragua is known for being a nation of poets! Every year we offer a poetry competition for our anniversary celebration, and for our 21st in November, we received many beautiful submissions! Poetry is very difficult to translate, but we have faithfully translated the winning submissions to the best of our abilities!

A Note From Jane

Happy Valentine’s Day from the Sweetheart City, Loveland Colorado where each year, more than a hundred thousand love letters are sent to the city. They are then sent to the intended recipients with the official Loveland Colorado cachet and stamp. Each year, more than 160,000 love letters will get to their final destination from Loveland.

This special tradition dates back to 1940 when the Loveland Chamber of Commerce President wanted to give people the opportunity to share the love. It soon received nationwide exposure, and the Loveland Re-Mailing program was born.

Every year there is the opportunity to advertise your love on light posts and telephone poles on the main streets in town. A little hokey maybe but something of a tradition and these sweet efforts have endured for over 70 years. There is something to be said for enduring and being constant in a goal. Our program shares that with Loveland, CO in many ways. So on this St. Valentine’s day, I thank you for being in for the long haul with us!

Two months into our new year and wow, we seem to be off to an encouraging start to 2023.
I am off again to Nicaragua to work with three group missions and tours before returning to Loveland in late March. You’ve read above about our trip to Cincinnati and the wealth of more precious books. Please consider how these might be used in literacy projects, country and worldwide. We’ll help! Donation receipts are winging their way to you all this past week or so with our deepest and most profound thanks for your loving support.
