Summer Matching Grant Is In Full Swing
Please Consider Making a donation Today!

Monthly costs to run the library now exceed $3,900 a month. Donations from our dedicated supporters like you are our only major source of funding that keep our staff paid, our lights on, and our mobile truck rolling along.

Funds are very low, and essential funding is needed.

Every donation made now through August 31st will be included in our annual summer matching grant.

Your donation today will help us twice as much tomorrow!

Update from our 3D printing students:

Sueños3D (our 3D printing center), located in the San Juan del Sur Library, supplements educational opportunities by offering a program of classes in 3D modeling and printing that engages students in innovative, hands-on activities and discussions of how to market the products produced. We are especially dedicated to providing girls the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with technology that can prepare them for sustainable employment and independent futures.

With seed money from an ALA’s International Relations Round Table (IRRT) grant, Wiston (the SJDS Library’s technology staff member), has been able to develop and offer a 3D printing course consisting of 12 class sessions. So far, the course has been taught four times to a total of 23 students (18 females and 5 males.)  The surveys collected at the completion of these classes inform us that this is a very successful program, and students are eager to participate in Wiston’s classes.

A group of Stella Maris high school students asked to create their science project on the Engineering Brightness lanterns which incorporate the 3-D printing skills. They received top scores and were a hit at the science fair.

Remembering Author/International Storyteller Anne Pellowski

HJH has lost a tremendous friend, resource, and supporter

It is with a heavy heart that I share the following note I received from Ann Pellowski’s niece who traveled with her on one of the several trips Anne made to do cloth book and storytelling workshops in Nicaragua.

Dear Jane,

I am writing to let you know that our dear Anne passed away on June 14, 2023 at around 5:00 A.M. local time following several months of failing health. She died peacefully at her home in Winona, Minnesota, USA, with family by her side. She was very well cared for throughout the past years and especially the past few months by several of her nieces who live nearby, as well as other family members and healthcare providers.

Our sorrow runs deep. Her vibrant life lives on through her family and all the stories she has shared with the whole world. She was truly a world citizen and a relentless advocate for children everywhere.

We are so happy that she had friends like you, thank you for your long term support of Anne and your friendship with her. She spoke so highly of you and dearly wished she could have traveled again to see you.

In sorrow, Kristine
Kristine Beck, niece of Anne Pellowski

Anne’s many workshops with all of the Nicaraguan librarians, teachers and families really brought story telling alive. Her worldwide contribution to children’s lives with books and stories lives on.

One of our favorite stories from Anne – the string story. She loved to teach us all to do it!

Tax Free Way To Donate to HJH Using RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) Money:

If you are 73 or older and taking a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA, you are able to avoid taxes by donating some of this distribution.

Donating some of your RMD money to the HJH Foundation benefits you and the Foundation! Not only will you see tax advantages by donating to a 501C3 organization, but you will also ensure we are able to continue our projects in Nicaragua that provide print and digital resources, programs to strengthen local schools, and technological, educational, and trade learning opportunities.

For more information on the process of how to donate a portion of your RMD money, consult with the institution that manages your IRA account, and contact us to get the Foundation information needed by your IRA provider.

Lovely Note from a long time Expat volunteer with the Mobile Project:

A Note From Jane

The passing of my dear friend and mentor, Anne Pellowski, is very much on my mind. I had the privilege of speaking at her funeral in Winona, MN and representing the wide international cadre of people who loved her and had over many years benefitted from her untiring and prolific efforts worldwide on the behalf of children. My heart is sad and the world has lost such an incredible amazing woman. She meant so much to me personally. She was an inspiration and friend to the end. Anne gave so much encouragement and support to all of us and our education projects at HJH.

I am also thinking of our matching grant and of the many projects that depend upon us such as the so popular 3-D printing program mentioned above. I am reaching out to ask each of you to consider becoming a significant donor to the HJH Foundation.

Many of you have been in our corner and show a willingness to circle the wagons in times of trouble – which seems to be now. So of course, it seems right at this juncture to reach out frankly.

We are in need of major cash donations currently and it would ease my heart and worries to have a few regular monthly donations coming in that would cover our over $3900 a month salaries and basic operating expenses. So, if any of this resonates with you, I would welcome your participation on this level with deep gratitude!

Gratefully, Jane
